Singapore acquired its flag in 1959. The flag has two halves, red above white. The red denotes universal brotherhood and equality, with the white symbolizing purity and virtue. In the upper left corner, a white crescent moon and five stars form a circle. The crescent moon represents a young nation on the rise and the five stars for democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality. The flag is treated with utmost respect and there are strict laws against defiling it.
